2010 Retrospective Part II

More 2010 Cartophilia highlights:

July:

The Forgotten Land of Bahar is discovered and mapped.

August:

Welcome to guest blogger Thatsaabguy. In his first post, he tells the story of his recent garage sale map purchasing triumph.

In September, Thatsaabguy told us of his Texas style breakfast.

October:

I discover a Hot Hungarian, that includes a map and a flag!

(Which makes this a good opportunity to remind you of my mostly ignored attempt at a Flag blog, Vexillophilia. Flags are fun, but there are so many great maps, it is hard to also keep up with flags. Thankfully, Michael5000 continues to entertain us with his Flag Fridays.)

November:

A geographical Sukoku puzzle!

Finally, in December, cartocacoethes on a painted brick wall.

Happy New Year to my fellow cartophiles. I hope it is full of mappy goodness for you all!

2010 Retrospective Part I

2010 was a less productive year at Cartophilia. New hobbies and real life stuff cut into my mappy-quality time. But for your amusement, some of the highlights:

January 2010 included much fun with transit maps, including an updated U.S. Interstate system as subway map:

February 2010 included more carto-valentines:

March:

A new map for one of my favorite board games, Power Grid. This one includes Brazil on one side and Spain & Portugal on the other.

April:

Read the sad story of The Incredible Shrinking Aral Sea.

May:

Marveled at some cartographic tattoos. I love maps... but not that much.

June:

2010 saw the introduction of the occasional T-Shirt Tuesday. I liked this one so much, I featured it twice. So, why not a third time. The way to a man's heart.

Part II coming soon.

Handy Mappy Christmas

Happy Christmas to me! Young Miss Cartophiliac gave this book to her old man:

From Here to There: A Curious Collection from the Hand Drawn Map Association by Kris Harzinski, of the Hand Drawn Map Association. A collection of hand drawn maps available from Princeton Architectural Press.

"From Here to There celebrates these ephemeral documents—usually forgotten or tossed aside after having served their purpose—giving them their due as artifacts representing stories from people's lives around the world."

I have been waiting for months to get my hands on this book. Aside from being a delightful collection of mappish fun, Yours Truly has a page dedicated to his own hand drawn map of Quastolia.

Brick Michigan

Another beautiful example of cartocacoethes...

Sunshine Superboy saw this map on the wall of an Ann Arbor pizzeria:

"Si Quaeris Peninsulam (or pizza) Amoenam Circumspice"*
